Individuals receiving acute therapy services are admitted to the hospital for short-term patient care for reasons such as illness, surgery, accident or recovery from a trauma. Therapists in the acute rehabilitation setting work closely with the patient’s medical care team to ensure that an appropriate discharge plan is agreed upon and that the patient is discharged appropriately once medically stable. Acute therapy emphasizes working on the skills or mobility tasks necessary to return home or to prior living arrangement. Patients are typically seen at the bedside and interventions can include stretching, mobility and strengthening exercises, positioning in bed, transfer training, and gait training.
